After 6 months of building a decentralized autonomous organization, here are the key insights from our journey. The biggest challenge wasn't the smart contract development—it was designing a governance model that actually works.
We built on Ethereum using OpenZeppelin's battle-tested contracts. The governance token uses ERC20Votes for delegation and quadratic voting mechanisms. Here's what worked:
The real complexity emerged when we started testing with real users. Voter apathy was our biggest enemy—only 15% of token holders participated in the first three proposals.
Our solution was implementing a delegation system where users could delegate their voting power to trusted community members. This increased participation to 67% within two weeks.
Deploying on Layer 2 (Optimism) reduced gas costs by 95%. We also implemented batch voting and meta-transactions for better UX.
